Barbara Clark Smith is writing The Freedoms We Lost, exploring 18th-century forms of consent and participation outside the confines of the vote. Mark McGarvie wrote, One Nation Under Law: America’s Early National Struggles to Separate Church and State, published by Northern Illinois University Press.
