Witnesses testified about the safety record of the abortion-inducing drug RU-486 and standards for women’s health applied in the drug approval process.

The Food and Drug Administration had received reports of 12 deaths that might have involved use of the drug, including nine in the United States. Of the U.S. cases, four resulted from infections with Clostridium sordellii, a rare bacterium. A fifth case was linked to a similar bacterial infection with Clostridium perfringens. The FDA concluded the other U.S. cases were unrelated to use of the drug. close
