Joe Mathews was interviewed about his book The People’s Machine: Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Rise of Blockbuster Democracy, published by PublicAffairs. In his book Mr. Mathews describes a merger of direct democracy and Hollywood-style politics. He argues that Mr. Schwarzenegger has created a new kind of political machine that has implications beyond California. He discussed his book with guest interviewer Rachel Smolkin. Topics included his interviews with Governor Schwarzenegger, the democracy of California, the concept of the referendum, the gubernatorial campaign, the recall election, the governor’s wife Maria and his mother-in-law, and the governor’s movie career.

Joe Mathews is a reporter for the Los Angeles Times who covered Governor Schwarzenegger’s campaign. He worked for the Baltimore Sun and Wall Street Journal before joining the Times.
