President Bush held a press conference to answer questions from the media in the White House Conference Center Briefing Room, across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. He spoke briefly about the United Nations cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon and international efforts to form a peace keeping force in the region. He also answered questions on a number of topics including operations in Iraq, efforts to combat terrorism, and national security policy. In his remarks he cast the war in Iraq as part of a broader struggle against Islamic extremism that held serious implications for the security of the United States. He also acknowledged that raging sectarian violence and mounting U.S. casualties in Iraq were “straining the psyche of our country,” and that there was no specific evidence linking Iraq to the September 11, 2001 al-Qaida attacks on the U.S. close
