Mr. Morse gave a speech entitled “Dictionaries and Democracy: 200 Years of Dictionary Making in America,” in honor of the 200th anniversary of America’s first dictionary. He talked about Noah Webster and how his successors, the brothers George and Charles Merriam, continued throughout the 19th century to maintain the first American dictionary’s status as the “quintessential democratic document.” He also talked about twenty-first century electronic and online language publishing. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions. close
