Ambassador Burney discussed his role as Prime Minister Mulroney’s “sherpa,” or personal representative in the Economic Summit for the Industrialized Nations. He said his role was to make arrangements for the prime minister in advance of the summit in order to inform the leader of the probable agenda and issues of most importance of each of the seven leaders of the industrialized nations. The term “sherpa” comes from the mountaineering term for the person who clears the way to the summit for a mountaineering party. close
