Karen DeYoung discussed her biography, Soldier: The Life of Colin Powell, published by Knopf. It is the first full biography of Secretary Powell. It begins with his childhood in the Bronx and follows his rise through the military ranks to become chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and finally ending with his role as Secretary of State in the George W. Bush administration. While not an authorized biography, Secretary Powell participated in six on-the-record interviews and also provided Ms. DeYoung with unrestricted access to his personal and professional military papers. The guest interviewer was Brigadier General Charles Brower.

General Brower is deputy superintendent for academics and dean of the faculty of the Virginia Military Institute. He served as an Army aide to President Ronald Reagan. close
