Robert Richardson talked about his biography, William James: In the Maelstrom of American Modernism, published by Houghton Mifflin Company. William James, the brother of novelist Henry James, is best known for his book The Varieties of Religious Experience. The author talked about William James’s family life and education, his contributions to the fields of philosophy and psychology, his belief that religion has more to do with personal experience than with churches and creeds, and his ideas about the exercise of free will. After his presentation the author responded to audience members' questions. close
