Assistant Secretary Kneuer, also administrator of the National Telecommunications Administration, was interviewed about the transition to digital television in February 2009. He explained that consumers will get the benefits of the advanced digital system, including additional channels, high-definition television, and communications capabilities. He said that analog transmission will cease on that date and that financial assistance will be available to help lower-income persons purchase new sets. Some television sets will require just a set-top box. He also talked about public safety needs for interoperability of communications devices during emergencies such as Hurricane Katrina.

The Communicators” is C-SPAN’s weekly series that examines the people and events that shape telecommunications policy. close
