Ms. Dole, president of the American Red Cross, former Secretary of Labor under the Bush administration, and former Secretary of Transportation under the Reagan administration, addressed the community services conference sponsored by the AFL-CIO in Washington, DC. In her speech entitled, “Preparing for America’s Emergencies,” Ms. Dole discussed the role of the Red Cross in conducting relief efforts in the wake of natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes and also in the Persian Gulf war. Ms. Dole presented a special recognition award to Mr. Landwehr, a member of a labor union who distinguished himself by helping people out following a tornado in Kansas. He spoke briefly to thank others who helped out after the disaster. close
