Professor Denton Watson talked about Clarence Mitchell, Jr. and his legacy in civil rights laws. He said that Mitchell worked with members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, earned a reputation as the “101st senator,” and was described by Howard Baker as the “magnificent lion in the lobby.” Other topics included Mitchell’s close relationship with Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson while working on legislation with him, and Mitchell’s direction of the NAACP’s lobbying effort on Capitol Hill from 1946 until his retirement in 1978. After his presentation Professor Watson responded to audience members' questions.

Professor Watson was a former public relations director for the NAACP where he met and formed a life-long friendship with Clarence Mitchell, Jr.
