Professor James McPherson talked about his book, This Mighty Scourge: Perspectives on the Civil War, published by Oxford University Press, which contains 16 of his essays. Essay topics include the reasons why the Civil War started, the motivations behind the leaders on both sides, and the reason it ended the way it did. He also responded to questions from the audience.
Professor McPherson has written many books about the Civil War. His single-volume history of the Civil War, Battle Cry of Freedom, won a Pulitzer Prize. His book on what motivated soldiers, For Cause and Comrades, won the 1998 Lincoln Prize. close
