The guests debated the April 25 Supreme Court case involving campaign finance laws and campaign advertisements. The justices considered whether Congress can bar corporations, unions, and other grassroots organizations from funding television and radio ads that mention political candidates in the weeks leading up to the election. Both guests' organizations filed briefs in the two consolidated cases, FEC v. Wisconsin Right to Life and McCain v. Wisconsin Right To Life. The Center for Competitive Politics agrees with Wisconsin Right to Life that this ban restricts free speech. Common Cause had lobbied for the enactment of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA), which put the current restrictions on these groups in place. The guests responded to telephone calls and electronic mail. close
