Andre Schiffrin talked about his book A Political Education: Coming of Age in Paris and New York, published by Melville House. André Schiffrin was born the son of one of France’s most well regarded publishers, in a world peopled by some of the day’s leading writers and intellectuals, such as André Gide and Jean-Paul Sartre. But the Nazis marched into Paris on his fifth birthday. Beginning with the family’s escape to Casablanca and eventually New York, the book recounts a life spent dominated by writers, ideas, and books. Mr. Schiffrin recounted his life spent in publishing, from his thirty years as publisher of Pantheon Books to his resignation and founding of the non-profit publishing house, The New Press. He was interviewed by cultural critic John Leonard. Mr. Schiffrin also responded to questions from the audience. close
