Christopher Finan talked about his book From the Palmer Raids to the Patriot Act: A History of the Fight for Free Speech in America, published by Beacon Press. Christopher Finan traced the history of free speech in the United States from the deportation of 800 people during the Palmer raids of 1919 for “radical thinking” to the establishment of the Patriot Act following September 11, 2001. The author argued that it is during times of war that the right to free speech is most threatened and detailed the political battlefield of the 1st Amendment.

Mr. Finan was introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT. close
