The Merage Foundation for the American Dream held its fourth annual National Leadership Awards dinner. Mr. Eizenstat presented awards to immigrants to the United States who have made major contributions to the country. Former Ambassador Francis Deng received a public policy award, Pulitzer Prize-winner Jack Rosenthal received an award for journalism, Shirley Tilghman received an education award, and Jerry Yang received an award for entrepreneurship. The twelve university students who received American Dream fellowships were introduced.

President Tilghman was unable to attend and a video of her acceptance remarks was shown.
