The speakers' comments focused on issues of biomedical research that address the specific health concerns of women. Ms. Healy explained the need for public support and congressional funding of biomedical research throughout the country. She discussed the sex bias in treatment of conditions such as heart disease and the reforms being made by the National Institutes of Health for more non-gender exclusive trials. Dr. King continued by discussing cancer among women and the need for progress in biological research. She mentioned that ten percent of women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and urged women over age 40 to receive annual mammograms. Ms. Stein expressed the need for collaboration among scientists to further women’s health issues. Her research focused on reproductive issues and the connections between women’s work, exposure, and age on miscarriages and spontaneous abortions. close
