Members of the Senate debated S. 1507, the National Defense Authorization Act, which would appropriate $291 billion for the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy for fiscal year 1992. A key provision in the appropriation bill would mandate the creation of a 15 member commission assigned to study the viability of regulations prohibiting women from participating in combat. Two amendments to the bill were debated by the Senate. One amendment would permit women to fly military aircraft in combat, while the other would prohibit gender restrictions on military assignments on an experimental basis. The Senate passed the amendment prohibiting restrictions on military assignment on an experimental basis, and tabled the amendment permitting women to fly military aircraft in combat. close
