Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne removed the American bald eagle, once nearly extinct, from the threatened species list at a ceremony near the Jefferson Memorial. The eagle was moved from the endangered to the threatened species list in 1995. While no longer declared endangered, the bald eagle will continue to be protected by a 1940 federal law that makes it illegal to kill the bird and by state statutes. close
