The thirteenth annual training conference focused on the issues facing minorities in the United States and strategies for lobbying events. Topics covered included the nomination of Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, civil rights legislation, and current federal equal opportunity laws. Ms. King began by explaining her experiences of getting involved in politics and the problems encountered by African-Americans in government. Ms. Norton continued by describing her plans for statehood for the District of Columbia and discussed her previous career as the head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Committee. Ms. Russell-McCloud spoke dramatically about the changes in technology that the United States had experienced in the past two decades and the importance of civil rights as the turn of the century approached. close
