Senator Obama, a Democratic presidential candidate, spoke about his comprehensive strategy to fight global terrorism. He said that operations in Iraq had left the United States less safe than it was before the attacks of September 11, 2001, and that if elected he would seek to withdraw U.S. troops and shift the country’s military focus to threats in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He said that he favored robust diplomatic efforts throughout the Middle and Near East in an effort to refocus international attention on threats posed by terrorist extremists. He also sharply criticized the Bush administration’s foreign policy for conflating terrorist threats in an effort to gain popular support for continued military operations in Iraq. close
