Sen. D’Amato defended his record as a U.S. senator in a news conference held shortly after the Senate Ethics committee released its report on the investigation into charges of ethics violations by the New York senator. Charges had been raised claiming the senator violated Senate rules and federal regulations for large contributors to his campaign. The report said the investigation found insufficient evidence to support the charges, but Sen. D’Amato had acted improperly in allowing his brother to use the senator’s office to conduct business with clients. Sen. D’Amato claimed to be fully vindicated by the committee’s report, and charged his previous campaign opponents with beginning a smear campaign against him. close
