Secretary Gates and General Pace talked with reporters about the current situation in Iraq, General Petraeus’s testimony before congressional committees this week, and President Bush’s national address last night about Iraq. Secretary Gates agreed with General Petraeus’s recommendations, saying that the next steps in Iraq would include helping Iraq become self-sustaining and reassuring other countries in the region that the U.S. will remain dominant. General Pace talked about the process of advising President Bush and General Petraeus on these matters. Both officials responded to reporters' questions. close
