Panelists talked about the life and work of the late David Halberstam, focusing on his final book, The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War, published that day by Hyperion. This history of the Korean War focuses on the battles of November 1950 in the snow-covered mountains of North Korea by outnumbered American soldiers and Marines against the Chinese Communist Army. The panel, moderated by Leslie Gelb, was part of the TimesTalks at The Times Center lecture series. A video was shown of David Halberstam at a previous TimesTalks program on January 6, 2007. Then Ms. Fitzgerald and Mr. Filkins joined the discussion which broadened to include Vietnam and Iraq. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience.

William Stueck is the author of Rethinking the Korean War: A New Diplomatic and Strategic History, published by Princeton University Press. Joseph Goulden is the author of Korea: The Untold Story of the War, published by Times Books. Don Oberdorfer is the author of The Two Koreas: A Contemporary History, published by Basic Books. Frances Fitzgerald is the author of Fire in the Lake: The Vietnamese and the Americans in Vietnam, re-issued by Back Bay Books. Dexter Filkins wrote the introduction to Ashley Gilbertson’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot: A Photographer’s Chronicle of the Iraq War, published by University Of Chicago Press.

David Halberstam was the author of fifteen books, including The Best and the Brightest, his reportage on the Vietnam War which won the Pulitzer Prize. He was killed in a car accident on April 23, 2007. close
