John Bowe talked about his book Nobodies: Modern American Slave Labor and the Dark Side of the New Global Economy, published by Random House. Mr. Bowe talked about exploitation of workers in the United States today that he said amounted to outright slavery. He talked about companies that not only rely on unpaid or very poorly paid workers to keep their costs low but forcibly restrain them. In his book Mr. Bowe profiles three case studies: farm workers in Florida, East Indian labor abuses in Oklahoma, and forced labor in Saipan, a U.S. territory in the Pacific. He also addressed the issues of democracy and globalization. Mr. Bowe responded to questions from members of the audience. close
