For the first time in the 50-year history of NASA, women commanded two spacecraft at the same time. They met in space when the Space Shuttle Discovery docked at the International Space Station. The Discovery crew was shown enterinig the space station after the hatch was opened at 9:39 a.m. CT on October 25, 2007.

NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson arrived at the International Space Station earlier in the month to begin her tenure as the first woman to command a station mission. Retired Air Force Col. Pam Melroy was the second woman to command a shuttle, Space Shuttle Discovery STS-120. close
