President Bush spoke about the state of the economy and federal spending priorities. He called for quick approval of supplemental defense spending and also spoke about his veto of spending for an education-health care bill, saying that it contained excessive spending. He also set out a series of deadlines for action, insisting that Congress pass a Veterans Affairs spending bill before Thanksgiving, legislation to ease the impact of the alternative minimum tax within the next couple weeks and his separate war-spending plan by Christmas. close
