Secretary Gates talked shortly about the operations in Iraq, but focused on those in Afghanistan. He talked about the development of infrastructure, the reasons why insurgency attacks had increased, the opium trade, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) obligations, and ended remarks on future stability in Afghanistan if the operations in the region are adequately supported. Admiral Mullen talked about the increase in violence in Afghanistan by Taliban operatives, the high level of support within Afghan communities for continued U.S. and NATO operations, the effect of NATO’s involvement, and the progress of U.S. training of Afghan police and military forces.

Undersecretary Edelman talked about the role of the international community in Afghanistan. Mr. Sattler expanded on the issues talked about in the testimonies of Sec. Gates and Adm. Mullen. close
