David Gushee participated by remote connection from Atlanta about recent developments in campaign 2008 and his book, The Future of Faith in American Politics: The Public Witness of the Evangelical Center, published by Baylor University Press. In his book, Professor Gushee identifies a third group in American politics, the evangelical center, that combines the social interests of the secular left with the religious values of the right. Instead of focusing on the “old” religious issues that divide America such as abortion, same sex marriage, the death penalty, the evangelical center addresses a “new” set of social issues with a faith-based approach. These include the environment, immigration, and torture. He responded to telephone calls and electronic mail. close
