Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Americas' Security Affairs Paul McHale and Lt. Gen. H Steven Blum, chief of the National Guard Bureau, spoke to reporters in the Pentagon about the report released the previous day by the Commission on National Guard and Reserves. Assistant Secretary McHale agreed with portions of the report which he said echoed procedures being implemented but said some recommendations for the National Guard would undermine the Guard and hamper their response to emergencies. He reviewed the history of the Guard’s emergency responses. Then he and General Blum responded to questions from the reporters. close
