General Patraeus and Ambassador Crocker testified on the situation in Iraq and progress made by the government of Iraq in meeting benchmarks for progress and achieving reconciliation. Both stated that progress has been made but that any drawback would jeopardize that progress, and both asked for continued patience.

Issues raised by members included the effect of the war on the economy, whether or not the goal of eliminating al Quaida and Iranian influence is possible, and how close the U.S. is to being able to reduce forces. close
