The Mexican-American Legal Defense Fund, the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights group, sponsored a news conference in the National Press Club to announce the group’s opposition to the nomination of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. Mr. Moreno said the opposition to the nomination was based on research of Judge Thomas' public record as a judge and as head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, in which the group found evidence that Judge Thomas bears an “ideological conservatism,” that would be detrimental to the cause of civil rights in the U.S. close
