Witnesses testified about the fiscal year 2009 defense budget. Defense Secretary Gates' testimony focused on the threats facing the United States including terrorism, nuclear proliferation, and failing states. He discussed how the Defense Department’s budget request will help it meet these challenges. He also talked about the war in Iraq, benefits for current U.S. soldiers, and recruiting efforts. Admiral Mullen’s testimony focused on the need to defend U.S. interests in the Middle East, revitalize the armed forces, and develop a strategy for deference. Senators questioned the witnesses on how appropriated money would be spent and about the treatment of men and women in the military. close
