Senator Arlen Specter delivered remarks about the Free Flow of Information Act of 2007, that would shield reporters withholding information, and about the Free Speech Protection Act of 2008, which would protect American journalists from libel suits brought in foreign courts that do not have the same protections for free speech that are found in the U.S. Constitution. Afterward, Senator Spector

participated in a panel discussion about those topics and others, including wiretapping. Between panels, Chilean poet Ariel Dorfman read a selection of poetry on tyranny. Then Steve Shapiro moderated a panel discussion Guantanamo detainees.

“The War on Terror: An Exchange About Censorship, Surveillance and Guantanamo” was a program of the ACLU Membership Conference 2008: Stand Up For Freedom, held in the Washington Convention Center. close
