Richard Newman spoke about his book, Freedom’s Prophet: Bishop Richard Allen, the AME Church, and the Black Founding Fathers, published by NYU Press. In his book, Mr. Newman recounts the life of the post-revolutionary African-American leader, Bishop Richard Allen. Richard Allen (1760-1831) was born a slave in Philadelphia and secured his freedom during the American Revolution. He founded two of the most influential black-led organizations in early America: the Free African Society, a benevolent organization, and the Bethel Church, the birthplace of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. He was also the first African American to co-author a copyrighted pamphlet. Following his remarks Mr. Newman responded to questions from members the audience. close
