Soviet President Gorbachev, in a dramatic news conference, described his detainment in his Crimean vacation home which began Sunday, August 18, and lasted three days. President Gorbachev, his wife and other family members were locked in their house without telephone or other forms of communication. Their captors were representatives of the coup leaders in Moscow. President Gorbachev praised President Yeltsin’s personal bravery and foresight which were instrumental in defeating the coup. Encouraged by President Yeltsin, demonstrators in the streets of Moscow and other capital cities had refused to accept the takeover by conservative elements of the Communist Party. President Gorbachev discussed his reforms and repeated his faith in the Communist Party as a viable institution. He responded to questions from reporters on his captivity and Soviet politics, among other matters. Translation from the Russian is by voice over. close
