Two conservative organizations held back to back news conferences to announce their support for the nomination of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, replacing resigning Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Both groups presented examples of the television and media campaigns each was planning to present to the American public to support the Thomas nomination. The Citizens Committee to Confirm Clarence Thomas promoted its ad supporting Clarence Thomas, which labelled the opponents of the nomination as being “liberal special interests and the soft-on-crime crowd.” The Conservative Victory Committee’s ad assailed the records of the members of the Senate Judiciary committee opposed to the Thomas nomination, to the extent of including headlines on Sen. Ted Kennedy’s involvement in Chappaquidick and Palm Beach. The ads were shown on monitors during the news conferences. The Senate confirmation hearings on Judge Thomas began the following week. close
