Four former administrators in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission discussed the performance of the commission in handling claims of sex and race discrimination in the American workplace during the tenure of Clarence Thomas as director. Clarence Thomas, later a U.S. Court of Appeals judge, was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Bush in 1991. During the period between his nomination and confirmation, many opponents of Judge Thomas' confirmation pointed to his tenure as director of the EEOC as evidence he did not pursue sex and race discrimination claims vigorously, and may not adequately protect individual rights while on the Supreme Court. close
