Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee offered their remarks to reporters at the close of the first day of Senate confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas. Senator Orrin Hatch, Senator Howard Metzenbaum, and Senator Alan Simpson offered brief statements concerning the first day of confirmation hearings. The senators spoke live from the floor of the Senate Russell Office Building where the confirmation hearings are being held. Senator Danforth, Judge Thomas’s former boss and chief sponsor of Judge Thomas in the Senate, and Constance Newman remarked that they saw the opening day of hearings as successful for Clarence Thomas.
