The National Commission on AIDS held a news conference to release a report two years in the making on the status of AIDS prevention and treatment in America. The report was extremely critical of the manner in which the Federal government has handled the AIDS epidemic, stating that leadership articulating the problem of AIDS in America has been called for but has not been forthcoming. The report called for greater funding for prevention of AIDS, treatment for drug abuse for all addicts, a single plan to fight the AIDS epidemic on the national level, and universal medical coverage for all citizens. The report also said between 1991 and 1994, 230,000 people will die from AIDS and 600,000 more people will become infected with the HIV virus, which is associated with AIDS. close
