Sen. Robert Kerrey, member of the Senate Appropriations and Agriculture committees, entered the 1992 race for the Democratic presidential nomination with a speech before supporters in Lincoln, NE. Sen. Kerrey, a Vietnam veteran, criticized the Reagan and Bush administrations for “malignant neglect,” resulting in a country halted by inertia and cynicism. Sen. Kerrey called for leadership centering around “posterity,” not “popularity,” and labelled Americans' enemy as pessimism, not a specific Washington administration. Sen. Kerrey’s announcement made him the fourth major candidate for the 1992 Democratic presidential nomination, following Paul Tsongas, Tom Harkin, and Douglas Wilder. close
