Senator Patrick Leahy, member of the Senate Judiciary committee, commented on the reopened Supreme Court confirmation hearings of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas during a recess on the first day of the hearings. He said he felt the role of the committee was to attempt to determine the truth of the allegations. Senator John Danforth, chief Senate sponsor of Judge Thomas, said Judge Thomas was fighting for the basic principles of the United States, and no human being should be forced to go through what Judge Thomas experienced in the hearing room. close
