The subcommittee heard testimony from a number of experts in the areas of nuclear science and international security. They spoke on the possible threat of North Korean nuclear proliferation. The North Korean government this past week announced it would sign an international agreement allowing inspections of nuclear weapons facilities in that country only after the United States “begins withdrawing” its nuclear weapons from South Korea. The U.S. government has not confirmed whether it keeps nuclear weapons in South Korea. The Defense Department says the U.S. will postpone the pullout of thousands of its troops from North Korea, so long as that country maintains a nuclear weapons program. North Korea, meantime, insists its program is for “peaceful purposes.” close
