White House Chief of Staff John Sununu responded to questions from reporters as he and President George H.W. Bush boarded a plane in Mississippi to return to Washington after a tour of several southern states. During the trip, former Governor Sununu had submitted a letter of resignation to the president, saying his resignation was in the president’s best interests. President Bush accepted the resignation, effective December 15. In response to questions, Sununu said the resignation had been his own decision, and he would remain as a “counselor” to the president through March 1992. close
