The delegates to the Middle East Peace Conference in Madrid, Spain, delivered final remarks on the last day of the three day meeting. Israeli Prime Minister Shamir, who left shortly after the conclusion of his remarks to observe a religious function in his own country, called Syria “one of the most oppressive, tyrannical regimes in the world.” His remarks, which included a denouncement of the Palestinians, set the tone of the final day of speeches at the conference, which were marked by vindictive accusations between the countries of the Middle East. Farouk Al-Shara, the Syrian Foreign Minister, held up a photograph during his speech which he claimed was a “wanted” poster for Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir from the 1940's, when the Israeli Prime Minister was allegedly part of a violent underground gang working against Great Britain. He also claimed Mr. Shamir had been involved in the assassination of a United Nations negotiator in 1948. Translation for remarks not in English was by voiceover. close
