The debate in the Irish Senate dealt with the resignation of the leader of the Senate, Sean Doherty. Mr. Doherty has made allegations that Prime Minister Haughey was involved in illegal wiretaps 10 years ago. At that time Mr. Doherty was serving as Justice Minister under Prime Minister Haughey and ordered the wiretaps. The Senate was due to take up legislation that would have outlawed wiretaps and that was what prompted Mr. Doherty to resign. Prime Minister Haughey has been associated with several economic scandals during his administration, which have led to a number of no confidence motions in the parliament. close
