Several Republican members of Congress participated in a news

conference sponsored by the Media Research Center to defend the

remarks made by Vice President Quayle the previous week concerning

American family values. Vice President Quayle had remarked in a

speech that Hollywood and television programs, such as the popular

sitcom “Murphy Brown,” contributed to the decline of family values in

America. Specifically, he criticized the program “Murphy Brown,” for

featuring a character who bore a child out of wedlock, which Vice

President Quayle said mocked fatherhood.

Media Research Chairman L. Brent Bozell discussed a number of

television programs which he said presented themes that denigrated

family values, and several Republican members of Congress decried the

disintegration of family values caused by viewing mass media

entertainment. The members of Congress also discussed the cause of

the urban violence in Watts in 1965 and in Los Angeles in 1992. The participants answered audience questions. close
