Mr. Reilly, head of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held a news conference during the conference to delineate the U.S. plans to improve the world’s environment. Mr. Reilly discussed the contribution of the U.S. to the conference, better known as the Earth Summit, and the U.S. stance on biodiversity. The U.S. had come under harsh criticism from other countries for failing to sign a biodiversity convention that was signed by Japan, Great Britain, and may other countries including other U.S. allies. Michael Young, alternate head of the U.S. delegation to the U.N. Conference on Environment and Development, continued to respond to reporters' questions for approximately eleven minutes after Mr. Reilly completed his portion of the news conference. close
