The chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Ron Brown, addressed the Democratic National Convention on the first evening of the proceedings. Chairman Brown vigorously promoted the 1992 Democratic presidential ticket of Gov. Bill Clinton and Sen. Albert Gore and pledged to elect Gov. Bill Clinton to the presidency in 1992. He also called for unity in the party to win the election in November and criticized the Bush administration’s record on civil rights and the economy. Toward the end of his speech, Chairman Brown stirred the crowd into chanting, “Read Our Lips, No Second Term,” referring to the second term of President Bush. close
