Former President Jimmy Carter addressed the 1992 Democratic National Convention on human rights issues around the world. He spoke about the work in international relations he and his wife conduct at the Carter Center in Atlanta and in countries around the world. He criticized the Reagan and Bush administration for promoting a warlike foreign policy in Central America and the Middle East, and called for America to seek greatness in peace, not war. He also criticized the Bush administration’s policy on the environment that he said resulted in embarrassment for the U.S. at the Rio Earth Summit. President Carter was introduced by the former mayor of Atlanta, Andrew Young, who lauded the accomplishments of the Carter administration in focusing on human rights issues and honored President Carter for basing his decisions on rational grounds rather than political ones. He also introduced Roslynn Carter, the former First Lady, who stood and received applause from the convention. close
